Spruce Pine NC Tag Office: Officer Arrests Diabetic Man for Trespassing and Resisting Arrest

On February 19, a diabetic man named Dillon Ledford was arrested by the Spruce Pine Police Department in North Carolina after a confrontation at the local Walmart. The incident started when Walmart employees called 911 because Ledford was found unresponsive in his car in the parking lot.

According to eyewitness accounts, police officers responded to the scene and used force to remove Ledford from his vehicle. He was subsequently arrested for trespassing and resisting arrest. However, Ledford's girlfriend, Leslie McIntosh, claimed that her boyfriend did not receive proper medical attention during the incident, which could have potentially fatal consequences.

McIntosh stated that she had been tracking Ledford's location on Snapchat and was expecting him to come home on Friday night. She expressed concerns about his well-being and feared for his life, especially since he has diabetes.

The incident highlights the importance of proper training for law enforcement officers in handling situations involving individuals with medical conditions such as diabetes. It also underscores the need for officers to prioritize the safety and well-being of those they interact with, even if it means calling for medical assistance rather than using force.

As a result of the investigation, Ledford was charged with one count of trespassing and three counts of resisting arrest. His bail was later paid by his girlfriend, who took him to the hospital for treatment. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (NCSBI) is also investigating the incident.

The Spruce Pine Police Department has not commented on the specific circumstances surrounding Ledford's arrest, but police Chief Kasey Cook did issue a statement on social media saying that the department had turned the matter over to the NCSBI for further investigation.
