For me, solo kite fishing is all about exploration and discovery. I recently took my 17’ Grumman canoe on a solo mission to explore a new area, and the experience was nothing short of exhilarating. My trip started early in the morning, as I cleared Stuart inlet at 0630. The sun was just starting to rise, casting a golden glow over the water as I paddled out to the local wreck known as Bullshark Barge. This spot is notorious for its abundant marine life and strong currents, making it an ideal location for solo kite fishing.

As I reached the wreck, I could feel the adrenaline pumping through my veins. The air was electric with anticipation, and I knew that this was going to be a day to remember. With my trusty Offshore Spinning Rod Light rigged with a 1oz weight and 3/0 circle hook, I set out to catch some of the elusive snook that call this area home.

The first bait I threw out got hammered by a slot-sized snook that jumped an impressive 15 times during the fight. This was just the beginning, as I went on to catch six good-sized snook and lose several more. The thrill of reeling in these feisty fish was unmatched, and I felt like I was on top of the world.

But solo kite fishing isn't all about catching fish – it's also about learning and adapting. As I continued to explore the area, I realized that finding the right bait is crucial to success. Waiting for commercial bait fishermen to throw cast nets and then swooping in to collect the spoils can be a challenge, but it's also an opportunity to connect with other anglers and learn from their expertise.

The key to solo kite fishing is using all your tools – depth finder, side scan, and eyes – to find schools of bait quickly before others notice. It requires patience, persistence, and a willingness to take risks. And when you finally hook into a monster fish, the sense of accomplishment is unparalleled.
